and still a third remark (directed to the "by the way"):
but is a space any more "controlcodish", than something
that *is* a symbol? each can be seen (in certain contexts) as an
instruction to do a certain thing, and so are like control codes.
*but* a) it seems that the command invoked by each character-as-control-code
is just to output a certain something (or *not* to output something,
as a special case) which is just the corresponding symbol. so control
codes seem to be parasitic upon symbols, but not the other way around.
