I think 'meme' is pretty good--it is suitably non-committal as to what it's a unit *of*, in the way that 'sememe', 'grapheme', 'morpheme', etc. are not. Yet it is in that tradition as indicating a "minimal unit" of something.

By the way--I like the direction that your ideas are taking. May I suggest that you consider "precisifying" them into a paper to be presented at a meeting of SIG/FIS (Foundations of Information Science) at the meeting of the American Society for Information Science in October next year (or maybe May of the following year)? (I can't remember where they are, but I can find out, if you're interested.)
